Early cardiac changes following anthracycline chemotherapy in breast cancer: a prospective multi-centre study using advanced cardiac imaging and biochemical markers
نویسندگان
چکیده
Methods 29 chemonaive patients with breast cancer (early stage and metastatic), underwent serial cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging (for LV volumes/ejection fraction, myocardial oedema and necrosis), advanced echocardiography (for LV strain in addition to standard measurements of LV diastolic function), pro brain natriuretic peptide (pro-BNP) and high-sensitivity Troponin T (hs-TnT, Roche assay) measurements. All tests were conducted at baseline, 1 month, and 3 months following commencement of anthracyclines. 6 normal volunteers (3 male, 3 female) underwent the same CMR protocol. For oedema imaging, a triple inversion recovery fast-spin echo sequence (short-TI inversion recovery) was used in 3 short-axis views of the left ventricle. For assessment of myocardial oedema, the ratio of mean signal intensity (SI) of the myocardium was compared to that of skeletal muscle.

Early and late left ventricular effects of breast cancer chemotherapy: a prospective multi-centre study using advanced cardiac imaging
Background Myocardial dysfunction is a recognized toxicity of anthracycline (A) and herceptin (H) chemotherapy. Whilst there is much current focus on the incidence and magnitude of myocardial dysfunction following the A/H regimen, whether these changes are mediated by reversible or irreversible myocardial injury remains unknown. We sought to determine rates of persistent LV dysfunction at 12 mo...
متن کاملPre and post chemotherapy evaluation of breast cancer patients: Biochemical approach of serum selenium and antioxidant enzymes
Backgrounds: Chemotherapy for treatment of breast cancer uses some drugs to target and destroy the cancer cells. However, most of antineoplastic treatments are non-specific and the innate cells will be damaged. In this study, the effect of Adriamycin/Cytoxan (AC) chemotherapy on status of antioxidant enzymes and Se levels in breast cancer patients was evaluated. Methods: A prospective study, i...
متن کاملThe Effect of N-Acetylcysteine Administration to Prevent Anthracycline-Induced Cardiotoxicity in Breast Cancer Patients
Introduction: Anthracyclines are one of the classes of chemotherapy drugs that are widely used to treat many types of cancers including breast cancer. Taking this class of medications has a significant relationship with cardiac dysfunction. N-acetylcysteine has antioxidant properties and may be effective in preventing cardiac dysfunctions. In this study, we investigated the effect of N-acetylc...

Cancer is the second leading cause of death in the United States and has become a health problem worldwide. The reported incidence of new cancer cases is estimated at 19.3 million, with a mortality rate of 10 million in the world in 2020. There are several therapeutic approaches for cancer, including chemotherapy. Chemotherapy is consuming anti-neoplastic drugs, alone or in combination. However...
